Bernie Rhodenbarr, that literate perpetrator of heisting hjinks and the only book-selling burglar I've come across, is back on the scene and up to his old tricks in Lawrence Block's The Burglar Who Studied Spinoza (3 hours). Carolyn, Bernie's dog-grooming, martini-drinking crony, is along for the ride, as they purloin a rare and precious coin that turns out to be far more trouble than its worth and that's a lot. Block, who reads here with the appropriate New York whine, and Bernie always seem to have a good time even when the going gets tough and the police get going on our hero. Reviewed by Sukey Howard.
