Election year Joe Klein's latest, The Running Mate, doesn't have the political-insider sizzle and the thinly veiled, real-life cast Primary Colors had, but it does have enough insider savvy to give it that extra political pizzazz. Billed as a "political journey," it seemed to me more a contemporary love story albeit one that centers on Charlie, an honorable, likable, somewhat irreverent midwestern senator (a bit Bob Kerrey-ish?) who is madly in love with Kate, a successful, independent woman appalled by political scandalmongering. To complicate matters, Charlie is running for re-election against a handsome young newcomer whose politics are to the right of Rush and whose tactics would please Joe McCarthy. Can the senator keep his honor and get his girl? Stay tuned to Anthony Heald's wonderfully engaging performance and have a great time finding out.
