"Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered to them as a precious gift." — Kate DiCamillo

Children's Book Week 2014May 12 - 18 is the 95th annual Children's Book Week! Established in 1919, this annual celebration of children’s books and reading is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country.

A few great ways to celebrate CBW this week:

  • Read! (Duh.)
  • This is the first year for CBW's Official Events to be held in all 50 states! These events give young readers the opportunity to meet favorite authors and illustrators face-to face. Be sure to check out all the Local Events as well.
  • Add some fun competition to reading by signing kids up for the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, which kicked off last Monday, May 5. This free online reading program encourages kids to choose their own books, and log their reading minutes to earn rewards and help set a new world record for summer reading.
  • On May 12, watch the live stream of the Children's Choice Book Awards Gala, where the winners of the Children's Choice Book Awards will be announced.
  • Browse all of our children's and teen book coverage for your young reader's next great read!

Children's Book Week is administered by Every Child a Reader (ECAR), a literacy organization dedicated to instilling a lifelong love of reading in children. The Children's Book Council, the national non-profit trade association for children's book publishers, is also a sponsor.
