Best-selling author Lilian Jackson Braun died at the age of 97 in Landrum, South Carolina last Saturday. Braun was the author of 29 The Cat Who... mysteries and had one last kitty thriller in the works, The Cat Who Smelled Smoke.
She began the series in 1966 with The Cat Who Could Read Backwards, completed 2 more novels and took an 18-year hiatus. She eventually returned to the series in 1984 and continued to churn out a wildly popular The Cat Who... book through 2007.
BookPage readers have always loved Braun's books. Our 'Burning Questions' column often featured questions about Braun's series, and it's easy to see why. Our reviewer gives a great picture of the hijinks of Braun's unique characters and the adventures of cats Koko and Yum Yum in The Cat Who Robbed a Bank:
The cats start generating clues by stepping on the phone as it's about to ring, yowling in the middle of the night at the exact time the murder takes place, chewing on pencils, hiding gum wrappers, and stealing the pennies intended to be dropped into an antique mechanical bank (thus the title of the book).
It's always so sad to see such celebrated and beloved writers go, but we truly appreciate her lifelong devotion to her series. What is your favorite The Cat Who... book?
