If you've already received the August print edition of BookPage, you know that next month we're focusing on first novels from eight promising new writers. There are a lot of reasons why we get excited about debut novels—and I'll tell you all about it in next week's BookPageXTRA. :)

One debut series I'm recommending lately was also one of my most fun interviews at the Romance Writers of America conference.

Deborah Coonts' first book was called Wanna Get Lucky?, and it was published in May of 2010, although the paperback is out now. The follow-up, Lucky Stiff, came out in February.

The books are laugh-out-loud romantic mysteries about Lucky O’Toole, a woman in her early 30s who is the "chief problem solver" at an over-the-top casino in Vegas. (Is there any other kind?)

Besides a mention in the New York Times Book Review's Notable Crime Books of 2010 list, Wanna Get Lucky? was a double RITA nominee this year, for Best First Book and Novel With Strong Romantic Elements.

Here, you can watch my interview with Coonts—a former tax attorney who lives in Las Vegas—about how she conceived of her books and what it's like to be a first-time author:

Have you met Lucky O’Toole? What new series are you recommending lately?
