I’m sure many readers agree that memoirs of “not-famous people” are usually better than the ones by celebrities and politicians! One of my favorite memoirs of this kind is The Road from Coorain by Jill Ker Conway, the story of an Australian girl who has a difficult childhood, then grows up to be a college president.

A now-classic of the genre is Mary Karr’s The Liars’ Club, the darkly funny tale of a childhood infused with drinking and emotional distress.

I also recommend The Orchard by Theresa Weir. This memoir, published in September, is about an unlikely couple and the orchard—rife with secrets and destruction—where they live.

Finally, any fan of gothic YA should read Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, a creepy and atmospheric Southern story. (Read an interview with the authors about the series here!)
