Those of you struggling to please a fella with the right Christmas gift can step up to the plate with confidence this holiday season, because the bases are loaded with great books for guys. Whether you're planning purchases for dad, husband or son, consider the following selections they're guaranteed to score big with the average American male. Though they fell a bit short of the World Series this past baseball season, the New York Yankees, founded in 1903, remain baseball's most storied franchise. In commemoration of the team's 100-year anniversary comes Yankees Century: 100 Years of New York Yankees Baseball, a glorious chronological history featuring a comprehensive text by veteran sports editor Glenn Stout, who covers the on- and off-field exploits of the Bronx Bombers. The book also features essays by all-time-great sportswriters and Yankee aficionados such as Ring Lardner, David Halberstam and Ira Berkow. Selected by co-editor Richard A. Johnson, the photos in Yankees Century show the greats in action or in repose, in celebration or in reflection, including some wonderful archival shots from the era pre-dating the construction of Yankee Stadium. Informative and browsable sidebars and appendices offer statistical data on individual and team achievements, as well as thumbnail portraits of the most important Yankee players, managers and front-office executives through the years.

A book with a much broader sports subject is The Gospel According to ESPN: Saints, Saviors & Sinners, edited by former Life magazine managing editor Jay Lovinger. The concept here is a tad esoteric, yet within the volume's general theme equating American sports fanaticism with religious fervor Lovinger pulls together wonderful writing and skads of color and black-and-white photos that illustrate not only the U.S. sporting life but elements of our popular culture, too. After an interesting and typically quirky introduction by notable (and so-called "gonzo") journalist Hunter S. Thompson, the text fans out into five basic sections "Prophets," "Fallen Angels," "Saints," "Saviors," and "Gods" written by superior journalists including Robert Lipsyte, Peter Carlson, Le Anne Schreiber, Ralph Wiley and George Plimpton.

Among the some 30 various athletes falling into appropriate categories are Muhammad Ali, Pete Rose, O.J. Simpson, Tiger Woods, Ted Williams, Larry Bird and Billie Jean King. There's also coverage of two world-class racehorses, Ruffian and Secretariat. The pictorial material is simply a diverse delight, including action shots of the athletes, excerpts from pertinent cartoons (e.g., "Doonesbury"), Time and Life magazine covers, old baseball cards, reproductions of classical art, childhood Polaroids, and many priceless candid photos of the subjects in both somber and silly moments. Scattered throughout the text are fun lists of sports-related trivia.

So OK, maybe a lot of guys are driving European- and Japanese-made imported automobiles these days, but that shouldn't stop any car buff from wanting to partake of Russ Banham's The Ford Century: Ford Motor Company and the Innovations That Shaped the World. Banham, a business writer for magazines such as Forbes and Time, offers a readable and consistently interesting text that charts the history of the industry giant, from Henry Ford's first Quadricycle, constructed in a brick shed in the rear of his Detroit home, to the company's more recent advancements in SUV and truck design. But Banham doesn't merely describe the Ford product here. We also learn all about the generations of the Ford family and their recurring role in the business; the development of assembly-line manufacturing; labor issues; safety and environmental modifications; high-profile management figures such as Lee Iacocca; Ford's presence on the racing-car scene; and the company's role as a vital cog in military production during wartime. The accompanying photographs wonderfully illustrate Banham's corporate history. Many of these images, drawn from private collections and the Ford Archives, have never been published, and they are remarkable in their variety and their scope, including advertising art, pertinent views of items of pop culture and rare photos of Henry I hanging out with his buddy Thomas Edison. Of course, the car photos are purely captivating, especially a center section featuring a color cavalcade of models ranging from the 1914 Model T, to the 1941 Lincoln Continental, to the 1955 Thunderbird, to the 1964 Aston Martin DB5 (James Bond's favorite mode of transport), on up to the 1991 Ford Explorer. In many ways, the history of Ford Motor Company is the history of modern American business. This rare volume's conscious attempt to place Ford and its products within the American sociocultural context is hugely successful.

Finally, for the more free-spirited motorist male, there's 100 Years of Harley-Davidson, written by Willie G. Davidson, grandson of one of the company's co-founders. Believe it or not, the famous motorcycle manufacturer's story is similar to Ford's. Run by a tight-knit family, the Harley-Davidson enterprise has been characterized by dedication to quality and a vested interest in its much smaller but incredibly loyal customer base. Davidson relates the company history with pride and clarity, discussing mechanical and styling innovations, marketing successes and failures, the rise of H-D dealerships, H-D's production of vehicles for military use, and the motorcycle's growing image as one of rebelliousness (which he primarily discounts as the by-product of exaggerated media hype). With candor, Davidson also revisits a decade-long period in the 60s and 70s when the company was sold to a multinational conglomerate, a relationship that didn't work out (the family has since regained ownership). But with all due respect to Davidson's narrative, the approximately 500 color and black-and-white photos tell the story a bit more vividly. All the pictures are stunning, especially a series of double-page spreads featuring popular cycle models, along with descriptions of stylistic innovations and a rundown of powertrain and chassis specifications. A beautiful book, as singular as Marlon Brando in The Wild One, the film that made motorcycles famous.

Who doesn't love to be able to walk out of a holiday blockbuster and say, "Well, not bad but the book was better"? Get a jump on the season's upcoming films by reading the great books that inspired them, several of which are available in new editions.

It would be impossible to read the entrancing prologue to The Hours by Michael Cunningham and not keep going. The novel, awarded both the Pulitzer Prize for fiction and the PEN/Faulkner Award in 1999, begins with an evocation of Virginia Woolf's suicide, then jumps to the contemporary era, where two women seek to escape their varied bonds through Woolf's writing. The film, with a screenplay by David Hare, stars Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore as the two women and Nicole Kidman as Woolf.

In About Schmidt by Louis Begley, Jack Nicholson again plays the unlikable guy who grows on you; this is said to be among his most affecting performances. Schmidt is an old-school lawyer, now retired, whose beloved wife has recently died. Always cool and distant toward his daughter, Schmidt now finds himself unable to accept the Jewish lawyer she married. The novel sets his pride and loneliness against warmly humorous social commentary as Schmidt's reserve is shaken by the two women who enter his life. Was Chuck Barris, undisputed eccentric and the mastermind behind The Gong Show, really an undercover CIA assassin known as Sunny Sixkiller? So he claims in his characteristically nutzoid memoir, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, soon to be a major motion picture directed by George Clooney and starring Sam Rockwell as Barris. First published in 1982, the book has long been out of print; Talk Miramax's new trade paperback coincides with the film's December release and includes eight pages of film stills. The script was co-authored by fellow eccentric Charlie Kaufman, the man who brought us Being John Malkovich and Adaptation (see below).

Sticking with the theme of the zany memoir, Adaptation is screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's manic account of his effort to make a film adaptation of Susan Orlean's The Orchid Thief. In the film, Orlean's true story of the orchid thief, John Laroche (Chris Cooper), has to compete with the screenwriter's self-obsessed fever dream sparked by his infatuation with the back-cover photo of Orlean (Meryl Streep). Nicolas Cage plays Kaufman and his imaginary twin brother, Donald, a character-within-a-character in a story-within-a-story. The film, both a wacked-out satire of Hollywood and a writer's quest for meaning, reunites Kaufman with Being John Malkovich director Spike Jonze.

Occasionally you come across a book that makes you wonder at the deep wells of strength and gumption its author must draw from. Finding Fish by Antwone Quenton Fisher is one such book. Fisher was born in prison to a teenage mom and spent two years with a loving foster family before being moved to the home of the Pickett clan, where he endured 14 years of unimaginable abuse. At 18 he joined the Navy, and it almost certainly saved his life. His remarkable memoir has been adapted for the screen by first-time director Denzel Washington, who stars as the Navy psychiatrist who mentored Fisher.

In conjunction with the film Gods and Generals, directed by Ronald F. Maxwell (Gettysburg), Ballantine is releasing a new boxed set of the Civil War trilogy by Michael Shaara and his son, Jeff M. Shaara Gods and Generals, The Killer Angels and The Last Full Measure. Gods and Generals, a prequel to Gettysburg, documents one of this country's bloodiest eras and follows the rise and fall of legendary war hero Stonewall Jackson (Stephen Lang); Robert Duvall and Jeff Daniels also star. Also timed to coincide with the film is Gods and Generals: The Paintings of Mort Kunstlerfeaturing more than 65 works by the noted Civil War artist and text by historian James I. Robertson Jr.

Here's the news, buckaroos: Those rootin'-tootin', pistol-packin' papas (and mamas) who made the old West wild are ridin' herd again. That's right with their old-fashioned, aw-shucks etiquette, quicksilver dexterity and quiet stoicism (not to mention their ways with a horse), cowboys continue to romance us. Douglas B. Offering a close-up and visceral view of one of America's finest contemporary poets, Larry "Ratso" Sloman's On the Road with Bob Dylan, a behind-the-scenes look at Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue tour of 1975, is a fascinating portrait of the man who once advised, "Take care of all your memories. For you cannot relive them." Luckily for Dylan, Sloman took note of all the happenings during the unforgettable tour that took place in support of the multi-platinum album Desire. Originally published in 1978, his book is being reissued this month with new photographs and a new foreword by Kinky Friedman.

In the whirlwind of that hectic time, Dylan's days were packed with commotion. Surrounding him were talented musicians like Joan Baez, Robbie Robertson and Joni Mitchell, as well as the poet Allen Ginsberg. He was involved in efforts to free Reuben "Hurricane" Carter, the legendary boxer wrongly imprisoned for murder, whom he championed in the song "Hurricane." And he followed a demanding tour schedule. In Ten Sure Signs a Movie Character is Doomed, and Other Surprising Movie Lists (Hyperion, $14, 304 pages, ISBN 078688830X), Roeper takes stock of Hollywood, skewering celebrity culture with his clever categories. Along with the usual best-of and worst-of rosters are lists that never existed until now, like “The Gross-Out Hall of Fame,” “Age Difference Between Michael Douglas and His Leading Ladies,” and “12 Actors and Actresses Who Took Their Clothes Off When They Should Have Kept Them On.” A mix of roguish comedy and expert criticism, this ingenious paperback covers almost every element of the movies. So you won’t have to, Roeper has indexed the best film portrayals of presidents (Harrison Ford in Air Force One; Bill Pullman in Independence Day), the worst singers turned actors (Madonna, Mariah Carey) and pop songs perennially used in the movies (Born to Be Wild; I Will Survive). The relationship between Zelda Sayre and F. Scott Fitzgerald stands alongside Frieda and D.H. Lawrence or Elizabeth and Robert Browning as one of the legendary literary love stories of all time. Fitzgerald wrote lyrical and trenchant fiction about the Jazz Age, and with The Great Gatsby he crafted one of the most moving and memorable American novels of the 20th century. It might be argued that Zelda was both the source of his emotional fire and a central factor in his disintegration. For Zelda, it seems, Scott served the same dual role. In two decades of marriage, they managed to transform a vale of fame and talent and passionate love into a tragic landscape of drunkenness, mental illness and never-ending debt.

Dear Scott, Dearest Zelda, a collection of correspondence edited by two University of Maryland professors that spans a 22-year period, includes a few dozen previously unpublished letters. It would be more apt, perhaps, to call the volume "Mostly Dear Scott," for the majority of letters are from Zelda. Yet there are enough responses from her husband to give credibility to the title and, more importantly, to give a sense of the often sad symbiosis of their relationship.

Scott Fitzgerald was a famous novelist by the age of 24, thanks to the astonishing success of This Side of Paradise. His love for Zelda was made into a metaphor in The Great Gatsby and Tender Is the Night, as well as many short stories. His fictions were made of their life together, and their life seemed the stuff of fiction. The letters between Scott and Zelda trace the arc of their love its great passion, its failures and its enduring strengths. Scott made himself into the famous man that Zelda Sayre needed to marry, and she tried to be the proper accessory. As she wrote in an early letter to him, "I feel like you had me ordered and I was delivered to you to be worn. I want you to wear me, like a watch-charm or a button hole bouquet to the world." She professed not minding to be "pink and helpless," but she soon thirsted for her own identity as dancer, as writer or as painter. She had talents in each art but not enough to make her name stand on the same plane as her husband's. She wrote to him, "I want to work at something, but I can't seem to get well enough to be of any use in the world." The beautiful Alabama belle was tormented with mental illness. Her extended stays in mental institutions drained Scott's money and separated the couple by a continent, forcing them to communicate with letters. Scott supported Zelda in the expensive hospitals and their daughter, Scottie, in costly schools, often through hackwork and Hollywood script writing. But, as Zelda wrote to Scott a year before his death, "Nothing could have survived our life." And, of course, she was right not the life they created, nor the one that rose up to meet them, not even the one they dreamed about when they first met.

Scott died of a heart attack in 1940, while he was in the process of completing what many think might have turned out to be one of his finest works, The Last Tycoon. Thirty people showed up for Scott's funeral. As with Gatsby, it seemed, the famous had forgotten him. Zelda died in 1948, burned beyond recognition in a fire in Highland Hospital, a mental institution near Asheville, North Carolina. The inscription on the Fitzgeralds' shared tombstone reads: "So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."

American flags are mingling with holly and tinsel this holiday season, as the burst of patriotism that swept the nation after the September terrorist attacks continues to find expression in displays of red, white and blue. In a country stunned by tragic loss and buoyed by stories of heroism and grace under pressure, books that celebrate the American spirit and the natural beauty of the land are a welcome source of comfort and rejuvenation. And in a reassuring piece of serendipity, three excellent new gift books that capture America, the beautiful, in all its glory have recently arrived on bookstore shelves.

The most glorious and unique book in the trio is America Wide, a collection of panoramic photographs by Australian photographer Ken Duncan. Each two-page spread in the book is an extremely wide-angle portrait of an American landscape, from the murky swamps of Louisiana to a breathtakingly beautiful Hawaiian beach. Duncan spent three years traveling across America, and he includes photos from each of the 50 states in this remarkable collection. Brilliant colors dominate the scenes, from the rich orange tones of an autumn hillside in Vermont to the soft glow of sunset near Red Rock Canyon, Nevada. Along with the photos are Duncan's own brief commentaries on what makes America a great nation. Written long before the events of Sept. 11, his words have an almost eerie relevance today. "Our roots provide the strength to withstand the storms of constant change," he writes. The hardy pioneers who settled this country "have shown the way to overcome obstacles and stand strong in times of adversity."

A nation can be seen not only in its dramatic landscapes, but also in the faces of its people. Noted National Geographic photographer William Albert Allard uses this approach to fashion a kaleidoscopic view of the national identity in Portraits of America. Though he spent 37 years on the staff of a magazine that covers the four corners of the earth, Allard describes himself as "a photographer who specializes in America." Once given a choice by National Geographic of two assignments Russia or minor league baseball Allard immediately opted to photograph the national pastime. Some of those photographs are included here, glimpses of joyous, determined and dejected baseball players in towns like Bakersfield and Helena. As writer Richard Ford notes in his foreword, Allard finds his subjects "in remote and far-flung pockets of the American culture (blues clubs, minor league baseball parks, rodeos, Hutterite colonies, even, for God's sake, Minnesota) as though such faces and people weren't as available as once they were." In one striking photo, a group of cowboys, faces hidden behind their huge hats, huddle over a campfire at dawn. In another, an Amish boy, smiling broadly at the camera, clasps the huge hand of his much older brother. Taken together, Allard's beautifully composed and richly revealing portraits give us an intimate look at the face of America.

If a picture book could be described as "fast-paced," then USA would definitely earn that description. With more than 900 photographs packed into its 500 pages, USA covers a lot of ground everything from American landscapes to lifestyles to architecture. Spanish photographer Jordi Miralles journeys from sea to shining sea, showcasing sights from the Golden Gate Bridge to Grand Central Station. Brimming with visual tidbits, this paperback offers an appealing overview of the nation and its people.

And finally, if you're looking for yet another way to show your patriotic spirit, Workman Publishing has collected an inspiring series of photos in a 2002 wall calendar, Glory: A Celebration of the American Flag. Each month features a photo of the flag taken in the days after the attack amid the devastation at Ground Zero, billowing along a charred wall of the Pentagon and waving proudly in the hands of Americans young and old. All profits from the sale of the calendar will be donated to the 9/11 Neediest Fund to benefit families of the victims.

In the late 1950s, an ambitious, enterprising young Detroit songwriter named Berry Gordy Jr. got his feet wet in the music business. He went on to start Motown Records, a history-making organization that cranked out hit after hit in the mid-1960s and launched the careers of a who’s who of R&andB, soul and pop vocalists. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Mary Wells and Jackie Wilson were the label’s earliest big successes, but following rapidly on their heels were Martha and the Vandellas, the Temptations, the Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and later the Jackson 5, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and the Commodores. These artists sold millions of catchy, slickly produced records, successfully bridging the gap between black-made music and the massive white record-buying audience. Four decades later, in Motown: Money, Power, Sex, and Music, author Gerald Posner takes on the daunting task of telling the Motown story. Posner admits that many people affiliated with the company would not grant him interviews. Consequently, he relies heavily on biographies, autobiographies (including those of Gordy and singer Diana Ross) and other published accounts to craft a readable if, at times, somewhat overly glib chronicle of events. The Motown story is mostly Gordy’s, and Posner focuses in detail on the head honcho’s predilection for authoritarian and paternalistic control, his many marriages and affairs, his eight children with a variety of partners, his exorbitant lifestyle and his attempts to shepherd Motown’s growth in the ever-changing music market. Despite Posner’s effort to humanize his subject, Gordy comes across as an egomaniac devoid of moral compass or business ethics a black man who exploited black artists. Lawsuits about royalties, rights and ownership remain pending even today. Eventually, after the company moved its headquarters to Los Angeles and sales of new material continued to spiral downward, Motown was sold to outside interests in 1988. With Gordy at the helm, it was said that Motown was like a family, albeit a dysfunctional one, where talent got gypped and bosses scooped up the gravy. Along the way, many individuals connected with the company tanked their careers, fell into a life of drugs, or headed for an early grave. But make no mistake the music was, and remains, great. Born at the turn of the century, Emmett Miller was a Georgia-raised blackface entertainer who recorded a string of records, mostly in the 1920s, that helped to fill the creative void between ragtime and jazz. Stylistically, he was neither blues nor country, black nor white. Think yodeling blues singer. Talent-wise, he was neither good nor bad mostly just something in-between, different enough to strike a chord with those who attended his minstrel performances and purchased his records.

Nick Tosches, contributing editor for Vanity Fair and best-selling author of Dino: Living High in the Dirty Business of Dreams, became obsessed with Miller more than 25 years ago—a fascination to which he admits without embarrassment while researching a book about country music. The fact that Merle Haggard dedicated his album I Love Dixie Blues to Miller was enough to tweak Tosches' curiosity. Not until he discovered one of Miller's recordings in the bargain bin of a New York record store did he understand why Haggard and others felt obligated to tip their hats to the entertainer. He writes, "When I heard Miller's actual voice, forthshining from the coruscations of those slow-spinning emerald grooves, I was astounded, and my search for information on him began in earnest."

To say that Tosches was obsessed with this white man who liked to perform made-up as a black man is an understatement. He pursued Miller with the righteous zeal of a cuckolded husband on the trail of his marital adversary. But, in truth, this gracefully written book contains very little information about Emmett Miller. Rather, it is more about the author's search for some semblance of creative unity and purpose in American music. It's a noble quest, a journey of discovery that is as entertaining as it is enlightening.

Daniel Swift’s paternal grandfather died during World War II, at the age of 30, while on a bombing mission for the Royal Air Force over Germany in 1943. In the course of research about his grandfather’s life and death as a bomber pilot, Swift, a literary critic and English professor, began to explore the relationship between the bombers and poetry. Discussion of the role of bombers is a sensitive subject for many because of the great devastation and the death of many civilians on the ground. As Swift notes in his illuminating personal and literary journey, Bomber County, “The poetry of air bombing requires a particular imaginative sympathy absent from other war poetry, and it must play between telling and deferring the tale: between the poet who survived and the others who died that night.”

Swift is concerned with bomber poetry written from several perspectives. He focuses on the work of noted bomber poets such as James Dickey and John Ciardi, but he also wants us to read poetry by those engaged in bombing runs who had not been poets but felt compelled to write poetry because of their experience, including Michael Scott and John Riley Byrne. He explores, too, the war poems of Randall Jarrell, who trained others to be pilots but did not see action himself. He considers in detail poetry by civilians moved by the terror of air raids. T.S. Eliot was an air raid warden in London, and “Little Gidding,” the last of his Four Quartets, is directly concerned with living in a bombed city. Dylan Thomas thought that he could write poetry only in peacetime. Although not a combatant, Thomas wrote hauntingly about the distinctive grief of aerial bombardment in “Ceremony After a Fire Raid” and “A Refusal to Mourn the Death, by Fire, of a Child in London,” as did Stephen Spender in “Responsibility: The Pilots Who Destroyed Germany, Spring 1945.”

As Swift continues to find out more about his grandfather’s life and death, he discusses the very different views of the bombing raids, ranging from “atrocities pure and simple” to “one of the decisive elements in Allied victory.” He does not shy away from discussing the morality and ethics of the bombers’ missions: “Bombing can be both bright purpose and dreadful duty; both horror and great joy; tourist and killer, proudness and fear.”

Bomber County is a stimulating and insightful investigation into the poetry of a particular time as well as a unique personal quest to understand a grandfather’s legacy.

Owning an impressive photography book is almost like having a museum in your own home: comprehensive and colossal, hard on the arm, but easy on the eye, these books offer more visual riches per square inch than the most glamorous of galleries. The perfect way to enliven any library, they’re packed with culture from cover to cover, pretty and portable (sort of). So dispense with the seasonal indecision. Tilt the scale in your favor when it comes to holiday gift-giving and pick up one of these treasures for the coffee table they’re a treat for any aesthete and the ultimate indulgence for the art lover on your list. Judging books by their covers There are unimagined beauties hidden deep in your dictionary, and Abelardo Morell has found them. Aiming his lens at the shelves of the Boston Public Library, among other institutions, the photographer has produced A Book of Books (Bulfinch, $60, 108 pages, ISBN 0821227696), a striking collection of black-and-white pictures presenting books as objets d’art, pleasing to the eye as well as the intellect. Re-envisioning the library, Morell finds magic in the stacks, capturing unforgettable images the marbled bottom of a formidable dictionary; gilded spines on a book-lined wall from ingenious angles. Here are venerable survivors (volumes damaged by water and dirt), classics in close-up (A Farewell to Arms; A Tale of Two Cities) and a visitor from the future (a digital text), all coupled with quotes about books from authors like Emily Dickinson, Jorge Luis Borges and Samuel Butler. From an Audubon folio as big as a table to the tiniest of texts a wee book that makes a paper clip look big Morrell has compiled a collection that’s rich in literary delights, abundant with the wonder of words. Nicholson Baker, author of Double Fold: Libraries and the Assault on Paper, provides the preface.

The genius of Stieglitz The work of a master photographer is celebrated in Alfred Stieglitz: The Key Set (Abrams, $150, 1,100 pages, ISBN 0810935333), the hefty, comprehensive companion to the Stieglitz collection at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Spanning five decades, from 1886 to 1937, the two-volume edition contains more than 1,000 images and provides a thorough survey of the New Jersey native’s work. From portraits and cityscapes, to studies of his wife, the painter Georgia O’Keefe, The Key Set collects the work of a man who captured America and Europe on film with an expert eye, applying painterly concepts to the picture-taking process and becoming the first photographer to be exhibited in American museums. Released just as a traveling exhibition of the Stieglitz collection is set to begin in the U. S., the handsomely boxed volumes include a chronology and bibliography, along with an introductory essay by Sarah Greenough, curator of photographs at the National Gallery of Art.

History in pictures Two centuries after the fact, we’re still feeling the repercussions of the War Between the States. A moving testament to the conflict that redefined the lines of color and kin in America, The Civil War in Photographs by historian William C. Davis is a remarkable pictorial account of the era. More than 300 classic images show the major arenas of battle and the men who participated, from bold, beardless youths to intrepid leaders like Lee and Sherman. Taken on the front and in the studio, these pictures gleaned from the work of 2,000 photographers evoke the drama of the first war to be extensively captured on camera. Documenting the famous and the anonymous, depicting life in camp and in the trenches, the volume combines portraits of soldiers and citizens with startling scenes of destruction, including images of Atlanta laid waste. Putting it all in perspective is Davis, director of programs at the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies, whose lucid, lively text accompanies the photographs.
